The end of 2017 is rapidly approaching, and it’s safe to say that plenty of us are relieved. Although this year in particular has been difficult, it did see the release of many women-centric and women-created films that we’ll hold dear as we move into the new year. With hopes of even more films to celebrate next year, we at Women and Hollywood are previewing 21 films set to hit theaters in 2018 that we’re particularly excited about. Though far from complete, this list highlights a few of the films we’re most looking forward to. To keep up with all of next year’s women-centric, directed, and written films, be sure to read our monthly previews, sign up for our weekly newsletter, and check out our Films By and About Women page.
After two years of speculation, Taraji P. Henson confirmed she’s dating Kelvin Hayden. The Empire star verified the relationship status during an episode of Essence’s podcast “Yes, Girl.” After hearing Henson briefly mention “my man” at the top of the interview, the hosts revisited the topic and asked her about her rumored beau. “I’m very happy. Everything is coming together,” the Proud Mary star said before spilling the tea. “I’m happy in my personal life.” The Hidden Figures actress then broke out singing, “Finally! It has happened to me,”—quoting CeCe Peniston’s song “Finally.”
Screen Gems has released one hell of a cool, new poster for their upcoming action thriller Proud Mary, starring Taraji P. Henson. Arriving in three different colors, the poster art features Mary sporting a collage of characters, weapons, and automobiles around her head that together make for the deadliest afro I’ve ever seen.

Taraji P. Henson is Mary, a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad.
Proud Mary is set for release on January 12th in the U.S. and February 2nd in the States.
Okay, if you are a Taraji P. Henson fan, then you are really going to love her latest movie thriller. The title of the film is Proud Mary, but that title does not do the film justice. The film is directed by Babak Najafi. First of all, allow me to quickly set the stage for you. Taraji is a hit woman, there I said it — “hit woman” — for a crime syndicate located in the city of Boston. Boston is definitely a fitting place to set a movie built around organized crime, being that only New York.
