Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: The Movie Review + YOUR OPINION!. It’s all about timing… Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a brilliant celebration of the Spider-Man character. Better, it is a work to the glory of the superheroic Golden Age that we currently live in cinema and on television. This film could not have existed ten or fifteen years ago. Or maybe so. But both in substance and in form, he would have lost much of his flavor today. It’s all the more fascinating because this spooky blockbuster lands two months after Venom, a symbiotic blockbuster a decade behind.
Let’s start with the surface. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks like nothing known. At a time when the animated films Pixar and Dreamworks use and abuse a standardized style, this OFNI rejects the rounds, embraces the corners, and swaps the quest for an increasingly realistic rendering for a kaleidoscope of colors which may cause cold sweats in epileptic spectators. It’s a 100 million dollar comic motion. A completely new thing… that requires a little time of adaptation. The image is sometimes jerky. And the background can seem hazy, like when you watch a 3D feature film without the proper glasses. Suddenly… it makes you want to see the film in relief, to appreciate the difference (if there is one)!
On the bottom, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a classic stroy origin… boosted by the infinite possibilities of the multiverse. A notion that is part of everyday life for comic readers. But after a hundred or so Marvel / DC Comics feature films, it’s worth noting how much the concept is new and underused in film. So let’s put ourselves in the place of a lonely spectator: Spider-Man who meets other Spider-Man? It’s just great! Through the animation, Sony Pictures offers fans of the Weaver what is legitimately expected after six films and two reboots: Decelty, mythology, an experienced snug, unpublished villains, etc. Not an icon frozen forever in adolescence. A modern superhero who evolves. This modernity is particularly illustrated by the use of characters who have hardly… four years of existence!
If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse suffers from a story a bit predictable, this slight defect is counterbalanced by… everything else. The characters are endearing, the jokes fly, the action scenes are catchy – except the final battle, which turns quickly to the free chromatic explosion – and there are beautiful emotions. Charming from end to end. Even the vocal cast is crazy and meta: Mahershala Ali ( Luke Cage ), Liev Schreiber ( X-Men Origins: Wolverine ), Nicolas Cage ( Ghost Rider ), Chris Pine ( Wonder Woman )… Children finally have their Deadpool, an ultra-referenced film that honors and gently mocks the past. It really feels like a tribute to an era. Enhanced impression by Stan Lee’s cameo, which is disturbingly accurate after the death of the co-creator of the Marvel universe. Actually, if it had been his last cameo, it would have been perfect.
A legendary film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse celebrates more than half a century of Spider-Man adventures, from comics to movies to television and video games. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman make an admirable copy. So much so that one would almost wait for a spin-off on Aunt May. This is the level. Peter, Miles, Gwen, Peni… Whatever the name is, they are Spider-Man. The only thing that can be feared in the near future is a depletion of this nascent animated franchise, LEGO way. But Spider-Man has seen others and it is not a sequel and a spin-off female that may scare him! PS: stay until the end of the credits…
