DESCRIPTION

After the highs of winning the world championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.

Pitch Perfect could not have arrived at a better time. Its release in 2012 was met with solid reviews and box office figures, but that was just the beginning for the fandom that would ensue. It told the story of the Barden Bellas, an all-female university a cappella group led by Anna Kendrick vying for the top spot at Nationals. Blending Top 40 hits and an underdog narrative was effective. Soon, you could not escape the presence of singing groups and acapella wordplay (“aca-scuse me?”).

The arrival of Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015 proved that the Bellas were no fluke. The second film dipped in quality, but was a worthy successor.

Off-the-shoulder tops dominated as one of this year’s most prevailing trends but the latest way to show off your shoulders is the one-shoulder top. Mandy Moore, Brittany Snow and Margot Robbie (among other stylish celebs) have recently been seen rocking sexy one-shoulder silhouettes on the red carpet, proving that the ’80s-inspired style is here to stay. Each of the gorgeous actresses wore a bold statement-making look; Moore opted for a black ruffled top and leather-like pants, Snow wore a voluminous cutout jumpsuit to the premiere of Pitch Perfect 3.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi continued to dominate the box office over the Christmas holiday, bringing in an additional $100.7 million over the extended weekend. This gives the film an impressive two-week total of $397.3 million. Debuting in a distant second place was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle with a decent $55.4 million to show for its opening weekend.

Another sequel opening this past weekend was Pitch Perfect 3 to the tune of $26.5 million. Although this is presumably the end of the current iteration of the Bellas, a healthy showing at the box office could lead to further adventures. Hugh Jackman’s latest film, The Greatest Showman brought in $14 million over the holiday weekend to bring its elongated opening week total to $18.6 million. The animated, family-oriented Ferdinand closes out the holiday top five earning $9.7 million, to bring its two-week total to $29.2 million.

Sci-fi holds off three new releases in top five; The Post delivers strong limited launch.

December 26 Update: Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi held off the debuts of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Pitch Perfect 3 and The Greatest Showman over the four-day holiday weekend.

The four-day period saw The Last Jedi gross $99m for $395.6m as it dropped 55% against last weekend’s second highest opening weekend of all time, which looks a lot better than the tentpole’s alarming 67.5% drop over three days.

By Tuesday the film ranked as the third highest of the year-to-date in North America and was poised to pass Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman on $412.6m. It stands a chance of finishing 2017 as the top film if it overtakes Disney’s Beauty And The Beast on $504m.

It was widely expected that The Last Jedi would have no problem repeating atop the box office in its second straight weekend in theaters, even while facing five newcomers that opened in theaters on December 20 and December 22. Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3, 20th Century Fox’s The Greatest Showman, Paramount’s Downsizing and Warner Bros. Father Figures didn’t come close to The Last Jedi, on the heels of its massive $220 million domestic opening and $450 million worldwide opening last weekend. Still, The Last Jedi dropped much more than expected, a whopping 68.9% from its debut, to take the box office crown for the second straight weekend with $68.4 million.

The 68.9% drop is surprising in some ways, especially considering its predecessor, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, only dropped 39.8% in its second weekend.
