DESCRIPTION

Molly Bloom, a young skier and former Olympic hopeful becomes a successful entrepreneur (and a target of an FBI investigation) when she establishes a high-stakes, international poker game.

Screenwriting legend Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, The Social Network) makes his directorial debut with the flashy and highly entertaining Molly’s Game. The film is adapted from the best-selling, fascinating true story of Hollywood “Poker Princess” Molly Bloom. Jessica Chastain stars as Molly, a fierce competitor who used her intellect and nerve to rise to the top of the underground, high stakes poker scene. The film has a Goodfellas feel to it with lots of slick editing, upbeat music, and onscreen visuals. Molly’s Game becomes too enamored with its subject, but is a helluva wild ride at the theater this Christmas.

Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain) was an Olympics bound downhill skier. A teen champion, she was driven relentlessly to perfection by her domineering father (Kevin Costner). This constant pressure taught her to thrive and be adaptable under imposing circumstances.

“I don’t feel too beholden to fame”, said Chastain. “because at the end of the day it could all go away, but I’ll be okay. That’s why I don’t have to make myself smaller to get work. I’ll just do theater like I used to…”

“Molly’s Game”, opening December 25, 2017 is based on the memoir “Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker” by author Molly Bloom.

“…’Molly Bloom’ becomes the target of an FBI investigation of her underground poker empire for Hollywood celebrities, athletes, business tycoons and the Russians…”

After graduating in 2003 from New York’s Juilliard Drama School Chastain spent years doing live theater.

In 2011, she appeared in four films including “The Tree of Life”, “Take Shelter”, “The Help” and “The Debt”, followed by “Zero Dark Thirty”, earning her an Oscar nomination.

Starring in “Interstellar”, Chastain’s other features include “A Most Violent Year”, “Crimson Peak”, “The Zookeeper’s Wife”, “The Martian” and the current “Molly’s Game”.

“Probably there are some people who feel great about themselves,” said Chastain.

Variety has tapped Aaron Sorkin for the 2018 creative impact in screenwriting award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The award will celebrate Sorkin’s prolific screenwriting career, which includes an Academy Award for “The Social Network” and multiple Emmy Awards for “The West Wing,” as well as his directorial debut with the upcoming film, “Molly’s Game,” opening Dec. 25. Sorkin has received Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations for the screenplay of the film. He was honored earlier this year with a career achievement award at this year’s Zurich Film Festival.

“Molly’s Game” star Jessica Chastain will be presenting Sorkin the award at the annual brunch on Jan. 3. Chastain will receive the chairman award at the Psiff Film Awards Gala the evening before.

Et spoke with the Molly’s Game star at the premiere of the film in New York City on Wednesday, where she opened up about Hayek’s recent op-ed for The New York Times. In the piece, Hayek detailed the struggles of bringing her 2002 film, Frida, to screen, and alleged harassment by Harvey Weinstein.

“Salma Hayek, what an incredible artist, what an incredible woman, what an incredible humanitarian,” Chastain told Et. “That piece really showcases why it is important to have more woman in leadership positions, because, first of all, what a producer she was.”

“Highlighting everything she went through to get her movie made, she’s such an accomplished, incredible human being [and] a voice we need in our cinema, in our society,” she continued. “I hope we’re getting to a point where we’re making lasting changes so women like Salma Hayek won’t have to go through what she did.

The year saw a lift from November box office grosses as this past month was only the third time ever November receipts totaled more than $1 billion, led by Disney and Marvel’s release of Thor: Ragnarok, which delivered nearly 28% of the month’s total. Heading into the November, 2017 was trailing 2016 by 5.3%, but coming out of it this year was 4.4% behind 2016 thanks to what was the third largest November ever and a 5.1% improvement over November last year. Disney led the month — after not having released a film since Cars 3 in mid-June — with two new wide releases in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and Pixar’s Coco, both of which have been overwhelmingly successful. Ragnarok was the month’s highest grossing title with $281.7 million.

When the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced Wednesday morning, Oscar hopeful The Big Sick rebounded after being shut out of Monday’s Golden Globe nominations, with two SAG Award nods, but other films were left out.

Movies that failed to receive any SAG Award nominations include late December releases The Post and Phantom Thread, which each earned multiple Globe nominations and have been recognized by numerous other groups.

Jessica Chastain says in a new interview that she was shocked by her Golden Globes nomination yesterday – due in large part to how outspoken she has been about Hollywood’s many allegations of sexual misconduct.

“To be honest, I’m mainly surprised about my nomination,” she told the New York Times of her nod for Best Actress in a Drama for her new film, Molly’s Game.

Jessica Chastain admits that her fifth Golden Globe nomination came as a surprise.

On Monday, the 40-year-old actress was recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for her lead role in Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game, but tellsThe New York Times that she feared her outspoken remarks on sexual harassment in the entertainment industry would have a negative affect on her career.

“To be honest, I’m mainly surprised about my nomination,” she confesses. “As an actor, I have a lot of fear, thinking that if I speak my mind, or something that feels like it deviates from the norm as a woman, am I going to be made to disappear in my industry?”

In October, the Times released an expose where numerous women accused former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.
