T’Challa, the new ruler of the advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must defend his land from being torn apart by enemies from outside and inside the country.

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers 4, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor: Ragnarok, Daredevil, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Runaways, The New Mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Gambit, Wolverine, Justice League, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, Black Lightning, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Krypton, Hellboy and more…

As filming on the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4 draws to a close – with Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany and Jeremy Renner all wrapping production this past week – Marvel Studios will soon begin ramping up the promotion for the first instalment of its two-part superhero epic, and this week brought us a new image from Avengers: Infinity War featuring Thor, Rocket Raccoon and Mantis [see here], along with a new piece of low-res promo art of Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, The Hulk, Vision, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Star-Lord and Gamora.

Marvel’s Black Panther is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the new year, with a Fandango poll of 8,000 moviegoers claiming that it is the second most anticipated movie of 2018, behind Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. While we’ll have to wait and see if this anticipation will lead to another huge box office win for Marvel, new details have surfaced from star Michael B. Jordan, who revealed that he was inspired by two villainous performances outside of the McU, Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto in the most recent X-Men trilogy. Here’s what the actor had to say below.

“You see performances as an actor, and as a fan, you look at Heath Ledger’s performance, say, in The Dark Knight, and it’s like, ‘Wow.’ I want to try to get something like that. You want Michael Fassbender’s Magneto.

In what’ll be greeted as a good omen by Ryan Coogler and Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther has been crowned the “Most Anticipated Comic Book Character in a Standalone Movie” in Fandango’s end of year readership poll. It was a tough field, too, with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in second, Tom Hardy’s Venom in third, Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey in fourth and Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp in fifth.

Though it’s good news for the upcoming pic, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Black Panther would take the top spot. After all, audiences have already reacted positively to his introduction in Captain America: Civil War and the hype machine is in full swing ahead of the film’s February release (it should also be noted that Black Panther is the site’s number 2 most anticipated movie of 2018 – after Avengers: Infinity War).

There’s plenty of movies to look forward to next year, and now we have some more brief glimpses with a collection of images. USA Today has released new images from Black Panther, Ready Player One, A Wrinkle in Time, Red Sparrow, and more. While these movies will get plenty of attention, it should be interesting to see how they relate in context to other films. What will Black Panther mean for the McU? Will Aquaman be more Wonder Woman or Justice League? Does Jennifer Lawrence has a new franchise on her hands with Red Sparrow.

On the eve of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel is battening down the hatches in anticipation of Black Panther, the Ryan Coogler-directed spinoff that cordially invites viewers into Wakanda.

If you’re not at all familiar with T’Challa’s backyard, Wakanda is the Marvel equivalent of a high-tech utopia, one rich in the fictional metal of vibranium. It’s the lifeblood of Captain America’s famous shield, not to mention the Black Panther suit, which itself is due for a major upgrade next year.
