A tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship.
The Purge franchise’s Frank Grillo stars in director Liam O’Donnell’s astoundingly entertaining Beyond Skyline, which is absolutely bonkers. The trailers have all been impressive, and now this new clip shows the beginning of the alien invasion. Now on VOD platforms everywhere, this movie is wild and a ton of fun, brimming with nonstop action and violence.
A semi-sequel to 2010’s “Skyline” which follows different characters from the same alien-invasion starting point through fantasy perils on a grander scale, “Beyond Skyline” does its predecessor proud in that it, too, is fast-paced and colorful enough to rate as a solid guilty pleasure. This helming debut for Liam O’Donnell, who co-wrote the original, is another showcase for the FX work of the earlier films’ co-directors the Brothers Strause and their company Hydraulx (which has contributed visual effects to numerous recent tentpoles).
All three dudes were centrally involved with 2007’s “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.” If this new movie also seems to have a whole lot of Aliens and Predators running around, well, it’s not the kind of joint you expect originality from, in narrative or even stylistic terms.
Plot: During an alien invasion, a grizzled ex-cop teams up with a frazzled train conductor to find his kidnapped son, trapped aboard a UFO. Review: I had written a list of the bizarre, inexplicable things that happen in Beyond Skyline with the intention of sharing some of them with you here, just to give you an idea of the film’s complete devotion to being as bonkers as possible.
Vertical Entertainment just dropped a new clip from the upcoming sequel Beyond Skyline (review), and we have it for you right here. Visual effects artist and original Skyline screenwriter Liam O’Donnell directs the surprisingly well-received installment starring Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy & Election Day), Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me to Hell), Jonny Weston (Project Almanac).

With strong effects work belying what was surely a tiny budget, Liam O’Donnell’s Beyond Skyline finds the first-time director relying on his experience in VFX departments of much bigger Hollywood productions. While O’Donnell would have been smart to hire a screenwriter instead of doing double-duty behind the scenes, the fanboy crowd won’t complain too loudly with one of their favorite character actors, Frank Grillo, kicking extraterrestrial ass in a space opera that could plausibly launch a very niche franchise.
Unlike many sequels, your enjoyment of Beyond Skyline will actually not depend on your opinion of the Brothers Strause’s original 2010 film because the two films are so completely different in so many ways.
*full disclosure: an online acreener of Beyond Skyline was provided by the film’s publicity arm. Director/writer: Liam O’Donnell. Cast: Frank Grillo, Bojana Novakovic, Iko Uwais and Pamelyn Chee. It has been seven years since aliens terrorized Los Angeles in Skyline. The original film went onto make millions in theatres. This follow-up, from director Liam O’Donnell, expands on the Skyline universe, exponentially; Beyond Skyline goes worldwide, with this title a co-production between the United States and Asian properties. At least one character returns from the original film. And, all of the events in Skyline and Beyond Skyline occur over the course of 24 to 48 hours. Basically, you could watch both films back to back. This second film is more action focused and lighter on story. This title sets out to be an entertaining spectacle and it accomplishes this goal. There is even a Godzilla (Gojira) fight to finish out the film.
