A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don’t apply.
Though the horror genre is often criticized for churning out more trash than most, when it’s done right, it’s a wonder to behold and 2017, in particular, has been a truly fantastic year for those who like their movies scary. Between It, Get Out and Annabelle: Creation, among others, horror flicks have ruled over the box office for the past few months, making it the biggest year for the genre ever. And the best part? 2018 looks to be just as good.
Between Insidious: Chapter 4, Annihilation, The Purge: The Island, The Nun, The Conjuring 3 and Halloween, among many others, there’s much to look forward to over the next year or so and with any luck, 2018 might just beat 2017 at the box office. But which releases are fans most excited about.
Variety polled its international team of critics, asking which films they were most looking forward to in the coming year. The results are diverse, ranging from likely blockbusters to potential Palme d’Or winners, although you won’t find a single comic-book movie on this list.
“Annihilation” (Feb. 23)
Alex Garland follows his hit debut “Ex Machina” with a brainy horror movie about an all-female team of explorers who venture into a deadly environmental disaster zone. Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s award-winning trilogy, the nature thriller stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and an iridescent mist that gives the air the sinister shimmer of an oil slick. — Amy Nicholson
For many, the pinnacle of Spike Lee’s career to date remains 1992’s epic biopic “Malcolm X.” A quarter-century later, he returns to fact-based drama with the incredible story of Ron Stallworth (played by Denzel’s son John David Washington), an African-American police.
“Too intellectual” and “too complicated.” Those were the concerns aired by David Ellison, the head of Skydance Productions, following a test screening for Alex Garland‘s “Annihilation” this summer. What followed was a request by Ellison to change the film’s ending, and reshape of the portrayal of Natalie Portman‘s character, but thankfully, the film’s co-producer Scott Rudin backed Garland, allowing the filmmaker to make the picture he wanted.
