The title Aquaman benefits since the relaunch of a screenwriter who has enjoyed the riches of the world of Atlantis. Dan Abnett oscillated between references to major narratives and massive action, all in an adventure narrative against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions. This background comes to bloom with this third album, which also sees arriving at the publisher an artist having made his weapons in houses indie: Stjepan Sejic . It is therefore with the appearance of a graphic novel that presents this new arc.
The king is left for dead. Rath took power, and Atlantis applies a hostile policy to the surface world. The Atlantean race considered noble is the only one tolerated. Arthur hides in the lowlands, and rubs shoulders with the other fallen of this system. Meanwhile, Mera tries, somehow, to mourn. From this initial status, this volume will only launch the first intrigues and interactions. Dan Abnett makes Aquaman an “urban” legend. The screenwriter focuses on both Mera and Vulko . Partially detaching from the main character allows the universe to gain consistency.
This continuous narration on three different planes can seem embarrassing. But the transitions are brought with fluidity, via simple techniques. It allows an attachment to the whole universe, rather than to a single character. Dan Abnett had already made the wise choice to take an interest in secondary characters in previous volumes. To accentuate this interest only reinforces this attachment. One can only appreciate the anger of Mera , and regret that Vulko suffers from the stereotype of the loyal and comic secondary character. If this writing brings a slight touch of humor, it also comes to defuse the critical tension in which Atlantis bathes.
